This week we discuss the transitioning of the forging system prototype into an actual in-game feature. There were also some UI improvements and a new Recipe Menu added.
I want to give a big thank you to Jack LaPlante (Zombie Zealot), and IskMonkee (Beetle Backer) for their support via Patreon. It helps out a lot! 🧡
Weapon & Tool Forging
Designing a one-handed sword.
This week much of the work went into transitioning the forging system prototype to an actual in-game mechanic. A summary of some of the changes and additions to this system is detailed in the section below.
In-Game Functionality & UI Improvements
The forging system works by using a forging station. This is a craftable block that the player can make. When using this block you'll be shown the Recipe Menu (I go more into detail about this menu in the next section). From the recipe menu you are able to create a new crafting recipe.
When creating a new crafting recipe you must select an archetype so that the game knows what animations to use, whether it's one-handed or two-handed, how the item is held, the hitbox of the item, and what item bonuses are applied.
After choosing the archetype of the weapon you'll be shown the forging editor. The UI has been improved since last week (and there's still more improvements to be made).
As part of this transition from a prototype to an in-game mechanic, the items you make now have the functionality to actually be items your character can wield and use!
This is an early demo of how the recipe menu will look like. You'll be able to design new recipes, edit them, delete them by clicking on the red x button, or crafting them. Hovering over a recipe will show you an image of the item on the right (the big black square), the stats, and the resources you need to craft it (smaller black squares at the bottom).
The recipe menu allows you to view crafting recipes. You'll be able to easily craft an item from an existing recipe, delete or edit an existing recipe, or design a whole new recipe entirely.
A lot of the functionality for these recipes are still a work-in-progress, but the goal is to have everything working in a very easy to use format.
Next Week Preview
There's still some work that needs to be done with the recipe menu, and then I'll be making this system work for armor. I'll be doing a few more UI improvements as well and if everything goes to plan I should start the spellcrafting system sometime at the end of next week!
