Also, this will be the last 'Fableforge Weekly Update' blog post. I mentioned this in the last weekly update, and I believe it'd be best to replace them with short-form videos. I actually have wanted to do this for a while, and for a few reasons.

Short-form videos (TikToks, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, etc.) have proven to be much more engaging, which is really valuable to me. I'm working on this solo, and it's not always good working in a sort of vacuum where you may be making the wrong decisions without knowing it. The feedback and suggestions you guys give helps me make much better decisions and feel much more confident going forward. I'm new to this, it's really my first game, and having you guys help me out in that regard will ultimately make Fableforge a much better game.

Making a short video for each new feature also allows us to kind of zero in on these features and focus the feedback on a specific subject. These videos also are shown to a much larger audience, which is also a major plus as well. Not only are they shown to a much larger portion of our own community, but they're shown to others who may not know about Fableforge and may be interested in watching it develop. :)

With that said, the weekly update blog posts will be discontinued in favor of short-form videos. It won't be as consistent as a weekly blog post, which may be the only drawback, but updates will be more frequent.

I'm excited to go this route and thankful for you guys following along so far. There's much more to look forward to, It's time for our next step!

Inventory & Actionbar Improvements

New inventory and actionbar functionality.

Several improvements were made to the inventory and actionbar this week. There's now functionality to allow moving and swapping items in and between the actionbar and inventory. Items can also be equipped from the actionbar, items can stack (most items up to 99).

Item icons are 3D render textures, I chose to go this route because the appearance of weapons, tools, and armor can be customized. I also added an animation to show what item is selected or being hovered over.

The inventory and actionbar is pretty much done functionality-wise. I think all that's left is to add tooltips. Improving how the UI looks is also something I'll do eventually.

Another thing I decided to do was to completely revamp the character panel. I kind of showed this last week, but I'm not too satisfied with how I initially designed it.

Gathering Improvements

New gathering improvements, including a flashing block animation, block breaking texture, 'punch' animation, and a block destruction particle effect.

I added some new effects and animations to gathering. I also added a delay to gathering blocks. I'm pretty content with the flashing block animation, I think it fits the aesthetic well and hopefully makes us stand out a little bit more from some other games with blocks.😅

I want to change the texture animation that's shown when breaking a block though, I think it can be better. I'll probably add particles flying out of the block when you hit it just to make things look a little less plain.

Another thing I'm going to change is to make it where the items aren't automatically added to your inventory and instead fall to the ground. There may be situations where a player may not want the item in their inventory, or that their inventory is full, so I think this will be a useful feature.

Next Week Preview

Many new improvements were made to the inventory, actionbar, and to harvesting blocks this week. Next week I'll be working on making a few more improvements to block harvesting, building, equipped items, and overhauling the character panel.

If I have time I'll begin working on a crafting menu for crafting basic items like new block types, forging stations, and resources. After that I'll be working on adding the procedurally generated resources system and improving some existing features, doing some bug fixing and optimizations, and then the testing demo should be about ready by then. 😎
